Preparing for an ADHD assessment doesn’t need to be stressful. A little organization beforehand can help you feel grounded and ensure your clinician has the information they need.
Here’s a simple, supportive guide to help you get ready.
Step 1: Gather Your History
If available, collect:
- School report cards
- Past psychological assessments
- Notes from teachers or employers
- Medical records
- Family history of ADHD or mental health conditions
Don’t worry if you don’t have these—many adults don’t. We simply ask that you provide any information available, and we'll handle the rest.
Step 2: Reflect on Your Symptoms
Think about:
- When symptoms began
- How they show up at work, school, or home
- What tasks are hardest for you
- What strategies you’ve tried
Concrete examples are helpful but not required. Our providers will ask probing questions to help uncover the answers.
Step 3: Consider Input from Others
If comfortable, ask someone who knows you well (partner, parent, friend) to share their observations. This can help fill in gaps. You are always welcome to submit letters or request questionnaires for your loved ones to complete.
Step 4: Complete Intake Forms Thoughtfully
Your forms help your NP understand your experiences before the appointment. Take your time and be honest. The more information you provide on your intake forms, the better understanding your provider will have going into your assessment.
Step 5: Prepare Your Environment
For virtual assessments:
- Choose a quiet, private space
- Test your audio and video ahead of time
- Attend on a laptop or desktop rather than a phone - we need to see your body language!
- Bring water, tissues, or anything that helps you feel comfortable
Step 6: Bring Your Questions
Your assessment is a collaborative process. You might ask:
- How does ADHD present in adults
- What happens if symptoms overlap with anxiety or trauma
- What treatment options exist
- What supports are available after diagnosis
You deserve clarity, and we want to help you understand yourself.
