Seeking an ADHD assessment can feel both hopeful and overwhelming. Many people worry they’ll be judged, dismissed, or misunderstood. At Sparrow ADHD & Wellness, our goal is to make the process clear, collaborative, evidence-based, and grounded in compassion.
Here’s what you can expect when completing an ADHD assessment with one of our Nurse Practitioners.
A Trauma‑Informed, Client‑Centred Approach
Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are trained to assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of mental health conditions. Our approach prioritizes:
- Psychological safety
- Clear explanations
- Respect for your lived experience
- Collaborative decision‑making
We recognize that many clients come to us after years of feeling misunderstood. Your story matters.
Step 1: Intake & Background Information
Before your appointment, you’ll complete intake forms that cover:
- Current symptoms
- Developmental history
- School and work experiences
- Medical and mental health background
- Family history
This information helps your NP understand the full picture—not just isolated symptoms.
Screening Tools
You will complete standardized ADHD questionnaires as a part of the intake process. These tools support the assessment but do not determine the diagnosis on their own.
Step 2: Clinical Interview
During your virtual appointment, your NP will explore:
- Attention, focus, and organization
- Impulsivity and emotional regulation
- Executive functioning
- Strengths and coping strategies
- How symptoms show up across settings
This is a conversation, not a test. You’re encouraged to share examples, ask questions, and reflect openly.
Step 3: Differential Diagnosis
Your NP will consider other conditions that can mimic or overlap with ADHD, such as:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Trauma
- Sleep disorders
- Substance use disorders
- Learning differences
This ensures your diagnosis is accurate and clinically sound.
Step 4: Diagnosis & Next Steps
You’ll receive:
- A clear explanation of your results
- A comprehensive written report
- Recommendations for treatment, accommodations, and supports
If ADHD is diagnosed, your NP will discuss medication options (if appropriate) and non‑medication strategies.
If the diagnosis is deferred or denied, you’ll receive a compassionate explanation and a plan for next steps.
